Today’s world is a visual place, more often that not images are what’s used to entice us to click through to an article, profile, etc. So how important is your headshot? Well if you’re on social media I’d say it’s pretty important. It encapsulates who we are, a visual representation of our personal brand and gives us credibility. Often it’s the first thing that people see when they look at our LinkedIn, Facebook or any of the plethora of social media sites.
So what should a headshot look like?
Strong, simple and authentic. You want a picture that will stand out from the noise. Putting you front and centre, wether you’re looking for potential new clients or maybe a new employer. It doesn’t matter if you’re the CEO or a PA, professional headshots are an essential in modern day business. You only need to look through LinkedIn to see how many people don’t seem to realise this and are using a holiday picture or a snap from their last party.
As an example and to save embarrassment I’ve used pictures of my friend ‘Tilly’ throughout this article. Luckily she agreed to let me share her pictures as long as I promised to take her for a walk to the beach. Tilly had been using a snap from a night out as her headshot image. Now, Tilly is a pretty good looking girl but she was having difficulty getting people to connect with her and respond to her messages. She wasn’t being taken seriously. Well that has now changed! You’ll be relieved to know that Tilly is no longer struggling since having had a professional headshot taken. With the resulting new pictures she updated her profile picture with a much more professional look, now everyone wants to engage with her. Apparently Tilly has a better memory than me, so it’s time to keep a promise and head to the beach!
