What do photographers do on a day off?..

People often ask what photographers do on their days off. The honest answer is usually the same thing we do during the working week — we take photographs.

Recently I spent some time at Loughshore Park on the shores of Belfast Lough, watching the Red Arrows display. It was one of those rare evenings when the weather, the light and the atmosphere all came together perfectly. Families gathered along the shoreline, children watched the skies with excitement and cameras appeared everywhere.

Although this wasn’t a commercial assignment, moments like this are still a reminder of why many photographers first picked up a camera in the first place. The simple enjoyment of observing an event, anticipating the right moment and trying to capture something visually striking never really disappears, even after many years working professionally.

Personal photography outings like this are also surprisingly useful. They offer a chance to experiment, practise and simply enjoy the process of making photographs without the pressures of a client brief or a tight schedule.

For me, photography has always been about curiosity and observation. Whether I’m photographing a large industrial project, a corporate environment or an event unfolding over Belfast Lough, the core idea is the same — watching carefully and capturing the moment when everything comes together.

Sometimes the best way to keep that instinct sharp is simply to take the camera out and enjoy photographing whatever is happening in front of you.
